Balmoral Blue

A simple client directive: to modernise and improve functionality. This evolved into a brief that addressed various underutilised aspects of the house: the access to natural light, the sensation of spaciousness and airiness, and maximising storage space. At its essence, we endeavoured to extract value and experience. We looked to the surrounding landscape; deep blues of the ocean and rich, warm hues of the land. With a minimalist approach, the detailing is clean and simple. A full site gutting and refurbishment of over 500 sq. metres, including new balconies.

The only aesthetic request from our client was that the house had to have blue in it; drawing the vivid blues of the ocean, already visible beyond, into the space.

A subtle palette of timber, stone and linen; influenced by the restrained rigour of Japanese design and paying tribute to the Australian landscape through the use of native and locally sourced materials, including sandstone from Central NSW, Blackbutt from Southeastern Australia, and ‘Blue Crystal’ marble indigenous to Far North Queensland.

We were looking to combine a sense of simplicity and elegance with a uniquely Australian lifestyle; the first Australian home of our clients.
