Bunker In The Treetops

Truth of material and connection to nature, the design draws heavily upon these Modernist ideals with an intentional casual eclecticism. Mid-century pieces mix here with contemporary and custom to create interesting dialogues. A simple concrete formwork box with soaring ceilings orientates to frame a local landscape emphasised by a prominent ridge line. Spaces are made to enhance human interaction. Intimate and larger ‘conversational’ settings stretch between internal and external spaces.

A mid century-flavoured decorative approach which directly draws from the unique natural vista to inform shapes, scale, texture and colour.

Customised and hand crafted, an almost artisanal approach to ‘soften’ the concrete structure and provide comfortable, conversational settings, with a strong emphasis on materiality and texture. Drawing the outside in to enhance and reflect the unique neighbourhood aspect.

Found objects were incorporated, such as a tree that had laid rotting in a rural paddock for 50 years. We sanded the natural form of the trunk to emphasise the organic shapes and remove the rot. Custom brass butterfly joints ensure the pieces are held together for at least another 50 years.

The architecture offered up opportunities to emphasise special moments for the everyday. It was a particular request from our clients that all the spaces, across 5 levels, should be used everyday, and they had a real sense of fun and openness in how we should explore this.
